Well-respected autobiographical comic book writer and curmudgeon Harvey Pekar died at his home in Cleveland last night. He was 70 years old… I hope his old adversary David Letterman says something nice about him tonight. And, if he doesn’t, I hope that Harvey haunts the shit out of him.

I love the idea of Harvey haunting Letterman. If I had more time, I’d start working on a script.
If Letterman is to be haunted, I’d suggest that we add Brother Theodore.

I guess 70 is a good run, but it is still a sad lost. I reread some American Splendor last night, really amazing how deep and sometimes humorous his stories of mundane life could be. He really bared his soul to the world.
When your heroes consistently appear in the obits, you know you’re getting old. Pekar, Carlin, Cronkite… Who’s next? Dylan?
It’s a sad fucking day. This news breaks my heart. His honesty will be sorely missed in this phony bullshit era in which we live.
: (
he was a tenacious little mother fucker.
rrrrrrrr. Don’t. Even. Mention. That Dylan will be gone someday.
I’ve already started working up some anticipatory grief, though.
anyone watch Letterman?
Man this sucks. I hate that they found him between the dresser and the bed. Like he was struggling to get up and lost the fight.
If it helps, I’ll share my anticipatory grief when the time comes.
I didn’t watch Letterman to the end that night, but I watched the first half and there wasn’t any mention. Hopefully he said something at the end… Also, I was struck by how unfunny Letterman was. The combination of Harvey’s death and that made me very sad. It’s like my world is ending.
I did a search and realized that Harvey had a slight Ann Arbor connection. He apparently wrote a history of the SDS.
File this under Everything was Better when We were Young.
Boy do I miss television when there weren’t station logo imprints and pop-up ads for other shows constantly covering the bottom third of the screen…
