According to someone on Reddit, this photo was taken recently in a Detroit high school. While everyone on Reddit seems to be outraged over the fact that high school students can’t have cell phones at this particular school, I find it much more shocking that they have 30 year old high school students.

The 30 year old students must be taking part in GRE programs, right? They can’t be regularly enrolled students, can they? Or was Strangers with Candy based on fact?
I think the oldest we have in my district are 24 years old (special education students)–or maybe it’s 21. Maybe it is meant to include adult education, but why would 30 be a cut-off age?
Special ed students are in the system until they are 26, but they wouldn’t be at Cooley. You can only stay on if you don’t graduate…once you get a diploma, your special ed services stop.
I don’t know why they would pick age 30…nevertheless, Cooley is closing this year so it won’t be an issue.
When I first read it, I thought that it said the Principal was Mr. Woodman.

In other schools kids have laptops. In Detroit they can’t even have cell phones.
I find it somewhat remarkable that a paper sign like this stayed up for three years.
I loved Mr. Woodman. He deserved a spin-off of his own. He was heads and shoulders above other television principals.
I know technology makes things change quickly but I only graduated 8 years ago and cell phones were STRICTLY forbidden at my high school. Sure you could carry one but it couldn’t be on or out in the open during school or you’d likely face confiscation or detention. I agree – they’re not necessary at school.
