When I heard that ABC was going to begin airing a police drama set in Detroit, I was hoping for the best. I was, perhaps naively, expecting something like The Wire. Judging from this ad, though, which was just sent to me by my friend Mike, that’s not what the producers had in mind. Maybe I’m reading too much into this one ad, but what I’m seeing isn’t a nuanced look at a complex situation – it’s straight up Detroit murder porn.

I like how it opens by saying that the only assembly line Detroit still has running is the one for murder. They try to redeem themselves later by saying that we’re trying to work through our problems as a community, but it’s obvious they’re just tacking that on to placate people.
it’s urban decay/brownfield porn too.
Pretty shameless ripoff job. They should have watched more of The Wire than the opening credits.
And also – Detroit does not have the highest murder rate in the country :/ At least the last time I checked it doesn’t.
“What if we do something like the Wire for commercial television, but don’t invest the years in research?”
Is it wrong for me to hope that the entire cast and crew gets their collective ass kicked?
I’ll watch it if Kwame gets to play himself.
Word on the street in Baltimore is that the young Mayor didn’t like being portrayed in The Wire. He’s since moved on to become Governor, if I’m not mistaken, and, in that position, has slashed the film incentives offered by the state, putting a lot of the local film guys out of a job…
Please Email with the information on the first day that Detroit 187 is to air on ABC channel 7.
I pulled out and will never work on this damn set again. They do not pay people like their actor like they should. I’ve put in 14 hours when they film. They don not pay their people like they should. I was in Scream 4, and Street Kings 2 and those are way better sets than Detroit 187. Never again will I be in 187.
An Inside look at Detroit 1-8-7
Biz X Magazine interviews Executive Producer Kevin Hooks of the upcoming (Sept 21 debut) TV drama Detroit 1-8-7.
The show is already causing a stir and some critics are disappointed in the way the city of Detroit is portrayed but Hook tells Biz X, “The beauty of a place like Detroit and the fact that viewers don’t really know it visually as well as some other cities like Chicago, L.A or New York is that it offers up an opportunity to make Detroit a real character in the show.”

I cannot wait to see this show! I’m so bored of all the character-less CSI procedurals – bring back some of that NYPD Blue flair to ABC!! I love Michael Imperioli and James McDaniel – and I know they are going to be awesome. Hate if you want to hate before you even see the show, but judge it once it airs. I’ll bet anybody that this show gives Detroit nothing but love. Sign me up – I’m watching!
