As I may have mentioned earlier, we’re trying something new for the next Shadow Art Fair, which is scheduled to take place on July 10. Instead of just having events at the Corner Brewery, we’re planning on having interesting things taking place at four different venues around Ypsilanti. I don’t want to give too much away at this point, but the idea is that incredible stuff will be happening at the Corner Brewery, SPUR Studios, the Elbow Room, and the Dreamland Theater. And, if all goes according to plan, we’ll have busses running between these venues from 6:00 PM to midnight. We’ll get schedules finalized and posted soon, but, in the meantime, I thought that I’d post this little video, shot earlier in the evening, of the five of us who are coordinating things, sitting around the table, negotiating what’ll happen.
It’s probably too early to commit to a lot of this stuff, but here are a few highlights…. Chicago’s Paper Mice and Ypsi’s Minus9 will be playing at the Elbow Room, an adult episode of the critically acclaimed puppet talk show Dreamland Tonight will be filming at the Dreamland Theater, kinetic sculpture races will be taking place at SPUR Studios, and, as usual, great bands will be playing at the Corner Brewery all day long. There will also be tons of film, noise, and performance art, but you’ll have to wait for details on those.
Even if just 10% of what we talked about tonight actually comes to fruition, it’ll be the best Shadow Art Fair ever.

Yay for videos :) It’s cool to see you guys hanging out and working out the details on the SAF. By the way, Patrick’s 11 eyed cat is kinda’ amazing. It would make a great tattoo, I’m just saying.

And I like that you guys have found a way to grow the Shadow Art Fair without changing the original. Seeding good events in other locations is much better, IMHO, than trying to change the SAF itself.

I wish we had two Patrick Elkins, so that I could put one on each bus. That’s how much I love the man.
Oh, I also wanted to clarify, in case anyone out there was confused. The guys in this video aren’t the guys responsible for the Shadow Art Fair, with the exception of Chris Sandon and myself, who are kind of serving on both teams. There’s another group of five that does the planning for the SAF. This is the volunteer group that came together to plan SAF-inspired events at over venues, and book the music for the Shadow. If you want, I can draw a Venn diagram.
Can you help me with a Venn diagram of “non-white middle aged male doofus hipsters” and “those involved in the planning of a multiple venue, city wide art fair”. I’m having trouble figuring out how many miles apart to place the circles.
In defense of the other white male doofuses at the table, I’m the only one that’s middle aged.
And, yeah, I get your point. These, however, are the people that came forward to volunteer their time, and I greatly appreciate them for it. Maybe you’re right, though. Maybe we should not grow the event, and not bust our asses to make something good for the community, because we’re white men. Or, better yet, maybe we should kill ourselves. That would be a pretty good Shadow Art Fair event. We could have a bonfire of white male hipster doofuses. Then, Ypsi would be perfect.

This raises an interesting question- Does Ypsilanti have hipsters, in the truest sense of the word?
I think of hipsters as people with rich parents who don’t work. (Maybe they pick up a few shifts in a record store, but it’s just for fun.) Maybe that’s inaccurate, though. I also think of them as being skinny and not particularly politically aware. All of which are things that don’t in any way apply to me.
I think the video would have been less offensive if at least one of you doofuses was in black face.
