I’ve been meaning to pass along a link to this article on the so-called English Defense League for the past week or so. I find the intersection of football hooliganism and anti-Muslim violence to be both absolutely fascinating and completely terrifying. Here’s how the article begins.
A middle-age, respectable looking man has emerged as a key figure behind the English Defence League. Alan Lake, a 45-year-old businessman from Highgate, North London, sees the EDL as a potential “street army” willing to be deployed against what they claim is rising Islamisation of modern Britain.
Lake, who claims to have made money through computers, runs a series of intranet services for far-right groups across the world. Addressing an anti-Islam conference in Sweden last month, organised by the far-right Swedish Democrats, he told delegates it was necessary to build an anti-Jihad movement. He spoke of the need for “people that are ready to go out in the street” and boasted that he and his friends had already begun to build alliances with “football supporters”…
I’m no fan of Muslim extremists, but it seems to me that that they don’t pose half the threat to us that we do to ourselves.
On the other hand, however, I am partial to a hate group with a gift store.
One wonders if something similar might be in our future, here in the United States. While we don’t have the rich history of football hooliganism that they have in England, we certainly have our share of bitter and angry white males, as demonstrated by the recent popularity of the Tea Party movement. I don’t want to overplay the threat, but one wonders what might happen should there be either another act of terrorism in the United States, or a charismatic leader who speaks to the fears and insecurities of the American people.

Yes, BA, you know me so well… It’s my fantasy that this happens in the U.S. I’d absolutely love it if we had an army of skinheads on the street looking to protect our way of life.

BA, did you watch the video linked to at the end of the post? If so, you’d see that, to a great extent, they ARE violent Nazis.
If you can get a bunch of tea-party people in the U.S. to react negatively to all your false accusations and provocations (violence, racism, etc) by their turning into what you shamelessly falsely accused them of in the first place (just so you could say I-told-you-so, and shut them down politically), you would have to seek immediate medical attention for your five-hour erection. And not only you, but everybody else here, knows it.
There’ll come a point, however, when that tactic won’t work anymore, even if you pull it off. The American people are growing increasingly weary of all the bitchy liberal bullshit accusations.

I agree. If the Tea Partiers do go rogue, it’s not due to the increasingly violent rhetoric of their leaders, but due to the liberals who have pointed out the increasingly violent rhetoric. If they’d just shut up, everything would be fine. They won’t use their guns unless you stupid liberals remind them that they’re carrying them in public.
So, BA, how could you have missed the obvious racist message of large numbers of fleabaggers? Perhaps your sunglasses are too dark or maybe you are just in denial. I don’t know which. And before you get all worked up about this and that, I would point out that I consider all of the “Speak English or Die” messages form fleabaggers to be merely thinly veiled expressions of the bigoted, racist and anti (non-white) immigrant views of large numbers of Americans. If this were 1870, we’d be seeing calls to keep black people out of white schools.
Regardless of your inability to see, I find the willingness to legislate what languages Americans can speak to be a gross and overreaching form of governmental social control. I think that you do, too, but fleabaggers don’t.
I agree, however, that the violent fleabaggers are a small minority and would be prone to violence, fleabagger movement or no.

I don’t think there’s anything that I can add that hasn’t already been said. I do want, however, to emphatically deny this claim that when the tea party turns ugly that I’ll have to seek medical attention due to my prolonged engorgement. That particular eventuality isn’t likely to happen until the return to earth of the young Myrna Loy, as foretold in the Thin Man prophesies, which, I might add, have proven e10000% accurate to date.
Also, for what it’s worth, I don’t just have a problem with Christian fundamentalists. I also find much of what Muslim fundamentalists do to be unacceptable in a free and open society such as our own.
Sadly, we don’t have the hooligan infrastructure here in America to draw upon.
