Laying in bed, hoping it’s not the West Nile virus

Linette and Clementine are at a kegger tonight at our friend Ruth’s dad’s house, and I’m home alone, sick. If you can believe it, I’m even shakier and sweatier than usual. I guess I’ve got a bug of some kind. Every time I stand up, I get a head rush, but, so far, I haven’t been vomiting or anything. So, I guess I’m thankful for that. I’m just breathing kind of hard, and moving kind of slowly. Linette, I think, is pretty sure that it’s just my anxiety manifesting itself in a new way, but I don’t think that’s the case. I slept most of the afternoon, which isn’t something that I can do under normal circumstances… And, yeah, I consider panic a normal circumstance… But, I suspect, the anxiety and the OCD are playing a part somehow. I don’t think they’re solely to blame, but I’m sure they’re in the mix somewhere. They generally don’t like getting left out… So, right now, I’m laying in bed, getting ready to see what Netflix On Demand has in the way of film noir, and hoping that this doesn’t turn out to be the West Nile virus…. Anyway, if you have anything interesting to say, leave a comment. I could use some cheering up.

I decided against noir. I’m watching Lon Chaney Jr in a film called Manfish.

Thanks. I feel a bit better now. The movie was good. It kind of played out like The Tell Tell Heart. Now I’ve moved on to Die Hard 2. I don’t think it owes as much to Poe.

I’ve seen Manfish. I was disappointed by it. I went into it thinking that Chaney would transition into a half-man, half-fish creature, like the Wolfman.

“Blogger dies of West Nile while watching Die Hard 2” is only slightly less predictable as an obit headline than “Blogger chokes on chicken wing while playing Warcraft.”

I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well. I’m pretty sure you’re going to outlive me, and I am still alive, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about at the moment.

Unhealthy living might just be catching up with you. You might want to stop letting Clementine keep dragging you guys out to keggers.

A little trivia: The wintery airport scenes were filmed at the Alpena County Regional Airport in Michigan.

Feeling much better today? Hope so.

Did you, and others, by chance try the little online quizzes at nytimes.com, testing focus and ability to juggle tasks? They’re from earlier in the week. Here: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/06/07/technology/20100607-distraction-filtering-demo.html?scp=1&sq=test%20your%20focus&st=cse

Also, encouraging thing in today’s USA Weekend–the squishy magazine tucked in with coupons in the Sunday Free Press. The magazine had Palin on the cover on Mother’s Day, First Lady Obama the week before. Then it did a poll asking readers whom they would rather have as a mother. Obama “won handily,” at 71% of 33,000 voters. And the magazine carried letters from readers upset/disgusted at the decision to have Palin on the Mother’s Day issue, apparently got many such letters. One of them:

Your cover of Sarah Palin has me outraged. You honor a mother who presides over the dysfunctional family she so mindlessly guided. This is not your welfare mother with no schooling, struggling to get food on the table. She had all of the advantages and none of the smarts. -Harriet Stanton-Leaffer – Matlacha, Fla

Hope you are feeling better, Mark!

Oliva, that is interesting….do they ever poll to see if someone would prefer a Obama v. McCain (or any male politicians) as a father? I have never seen it, but maybe they do? I ask because I really get tired of woman = mother (I am childless by choice–never wanted to be a mother a day in my life…NO motherf’er jokes, please :)).

    TeacherPatti,

USA Weekend is like the old Parade magazine, pretty fluffy, messy with ads. Hokey, at any rate. So the poll fits the magazine probably, as does seeing lovely Michelle Obama on a cover dressed brightly in purple, looking like the mother anybody would wish to have (71 percent of readers who took the online poll anyway!). But I appreciate your point very much. Being newly a mother, I really feel like the mother feeling is the same whether the creature you’re mothering is human, canine, otherwise. It’s just that a human requires nearly constant attention longer–plus all the other things I have yet to glean or figure out. I’m not sure, am just beginning to find out, but this is what it seems like thus far (and I think what my father tried for many years to convey, among other good things). The feeling comes from the same place and shares the quality and intensity, dogs or cats (or other creatures) and humans. In this case, God love ’em, the dogs are also babysitters for the super-dynamic, ever-growing, super-magnificent young human.
