Dingell on the Daily Show

My Congressman, John Dingell, was on the Daily Show last night. I didn’t find it to be a terribly insightful interview, but as he’s our representative, I thought that it belonged up here on the front page. As I think I’ve shared with you in the past, I like Dingell, but I don’t think I can ever forgive him for fighting against fuel efficiency standards and denying climate change as long as he did. Still, though, there’s something lovable about the tenacious old guy.

One wonders who will get his seat in Congress once he’s gone.

[Tonight’s post was brought to you by our old friend, fake newsman/gay prostitute Jeff Gannon, who may, according to White House logs, have had sleepovers with Bush on more than one occasion.]

    Dear Mark,

We already know who will get the seat – GM’s (former??) VP for Government Relations/lobbyist for GM: Debbie Dingle.

I don’t think Debbie has a shot at it. She’s too tied to GM, the bailout, the auto lobby, etc. She’d probably be able to tap into the Dingell machine for support and funding, but I don’t see her going all the way. Unless, of course, he dies in office and she’s appointed to his seat.

Edward, I’ll take that bet. I’ll bet she’s picked to replace him. I’ll also bet there are enough loyal dems in this district to elect her. I know she’s tarnished in some eyes but those ties to GM are gold in this congressional district…bailout schmailout – GM loyalty still trumps most common sense still.

lori, it figures you are dissing gm too. No surprise. GM is paying back the bailout and are surviving, I wonder if you are one of those ypsi closet repubs. Or maybe you reallyu hate southest MI. While Debbie might not be the one (hopefully not), you cannot resist the jabs.

@wet – nice try, you off your meds?

Please remember I know the big 3 very well, consulted on their business practices with them for years. If you want to construe that being a paid GM lobbyist that fought all manner of environmental, safety and consumer protection regulations is somehow in keeping with being a good Congressional representative, have at it. I won’t.

Two things – wasn’t dissing GM but if you want me to, I will go into detail about what a train wreck that company has been for a very long time – not the union work force but the white collar management. Everything from the boneheaded leasing business model to terrible design to lousy quality and worse dealership relationships. Bankruptcy – dumping your commitments to consumers is a lousy way to run a business. The idea that GM got to a point where that was the only way to go? That is bad management not bad unions.

They are doing so much better because they were forced to get a new, non-automotive CEO. His direction, while challenging, is something long over due.

If we stay blindly loyal to what GM wants…we’ll have Debbie Dingle in John’s seat. I believe, we can do better.

No, I don’t hate SE Michigan. Love Ypsi, Love Ann Arbor, not so much a fan of Detroit.

Now get back on your meds and quit the spin baloney.
