Christopher Hitchens on the Pope

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

I’d lost a lot of respect for the seemingly perpetually inebriated Christopher Hitchens over the past decade – what with all the Bush love – but his recent work on the Pope and his culpability in hundreds of molestation cases is winning me back over.

And, as an aside, when are we finally going to get it through our heads that those people who say they speak for God are the ones that we should be the most afraid of, whether it be in the Middle East or right here at home?

But didn’t God himself choose the Pope? I find it hard to believe that God would choose someone who helped cover up for a guy who fucked and tortured deaf children. Of course, maybe God didn’t choose him. Maybe the Catholic church is just like any other fucked up organization, and the Pope is just like any other CEO. Fuck the lot of them.

Some, if you can believe it, are attacking those standing up for the deaf kids that were molested. It’s kind of like how the right is blaming the left for instigating their acts of violence.

    From the NYTimes:

The university students, from the conservative Catholic group Opus Dei, handed Benedict a letter that read: “We notice that many have taken advantage of some episodes that are painful for the Church and the pope to spread doubts and suspicion.

“To these sowers of mistrust we wish to say with clarity that we do not accept their ideology … we demand from them respect for our faith and the recognition of the right that we have to live as Christians in a plural society.”

Thee Catholic League is saying that it’s not “pedophilia” but “homosexuality”.

Being prosecuted for raping children and enabling pedophilia is just like being killed for being Jewish, or so says the Preacher of the Pontifical Household at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

And here’s an interesting side note to this conversation… The age of consent in Vatican City is 12 years old – the lowest in the world.

Roger Ebert had a very nice blog post today on Hitchens, who is dying of cancer.

    Breaking news on the Vatican.

    — Vatican Bank being investigated for possible violations of money-laundering regulations, Bank of Italy tells CNN.

    So, they’re enabling pedophiles.
They’re run by a former member of the Hitler Youth.
    And they’re laundering money.
