Totally quotable Clementine: prison edition

clm09santajail

We were watching the movie Elf last night, with my parents, and there was this scene where Will Ferrell’s character, Buddy the elf, gets taken to jail. It’s a short scene. I can’t remember exactly why he gets sent there. I think it might be because of the havoc he created in the Empire State Building mail room, when he began drinking, and dancing on the tabletops, but it doesn’t matter. For whatever reason, Buddy gets hauled off to jail. And there’s a single shot, probably about 20-seconds long, of him sitting on a bench in a holding cell. He’s sitting there, in his elf outfit, just staring forward, as his mean-looking and heavily-tattooed cellmates talk to one another and do chin-ups. It was at this point that Clementine, with perfect sincerity, says, “It looks like there’s a lot to do in jail.” It was a beautiful little moment.

If she ever wants to drop by the Washtenaw County Jail, I’d be happy to show her all the amenities. She might not want to go home, though.

Driving past the state pen in Jackson once, we saw a bunch of prisoners out in the yard playing baseball and basketball on a sunny day and our 5 yr old son started whining that he wanted to get out of the car and go to jail. I had a hard time convincing him that it wasn’t as fun as it looked.

I know that jail is to be avoided. I’ve seen Scared Straight, and watched Oz. Still, though, there’s something compelling about it. All that time to work, paint, etc, uninterrupted by work, family, everything else.

That’s the one thing I miss about highschool — never again have I found a better venue for sitting quietly and drawing for 8 hours a day. I imagine prison or an asylum might offer similar perks, but perhaps without the pencils.

You’d better intercede with a viewing of the Shawshank Redemption before this idea takes firm hold.

Sounds to me like Clementine plans to rat you out, and she’s feeling a little guilty about it.

This is a milestone that I’ve been dreading… the first time my daughter is publicly offered prison “manbutt.” Thank you, internet.
