This morning, Erik Dotzauer, the Executive Director of the Depot Town Community Development Corporation, found himself inside a possible crime scene. Here’s his report.
(On the way to a meeting), I took a trail along the Huron River through Water Street. On the way back, I ran into cops with a bloodhound. Apparently we’d walked right by a pool of blood and none of us (had seen) it…. The (cops) wouldn’t let us take the trail back, so we had to find an alternative route.
I’m not exactly sure where the blood was, but it was on the trail through Water Street, close to Waterworks Park. There were 2 cops walking the trail with a dog, and about 6 police cars at various points along the perimeter of the Water Street property. We didn’t hear much and didn’t want to disturb their investigation, the only thing they asked us (the city planner specifically) was if he knew if people hunted out here. Makes you wonder….
So, what do you think might have happened on Water Street? Is it possible that a deer, after getting hit on Michigan Avenue, made its way to the river? Or, could it be that the blood came from a raccoon, slaughtered by the resident of a nearby tent community? Or, maybe it wasn’t even blood at all. Maybe it was just some kind of toxic, brown-field goo bubbling up to the surface.
As I’ve heard that prostitutes have been servicing clients along Water Street, though, my hope is that the police have actively been talking with local sex workers, to make sure that one of them hasn’t gone missing.
And, I don’t know that it’s connected, but it’s also being reported that an armed robbery took place in Ypsilanti last night, at the intersection of Pearl and Washington.

Just to clarify a couple things… This happened around 4:00 Saturday afternoon and I wasn’t alone on my way to a meeting. The meeting was a site visit to Water Street to look at the Border-2-Border Trail segments that could be improved on the property. I’m a little curious as to what the police investigation turned up, as I didn’t see any mention of it in the local press.
Has anything come of this? Was the blood sent to the lab? Was it human?
My friend, and fellow dog walker, was cutting thru there on Saturday. Said he found a bloody shirt then a black plastic bag full of what looked like intestines. He call the police. They showed up and sent him away. He told me this on Sunday. Sorry to only add to the mystery but that’s all I have.

My sources tell me that the blood was found more in the vicinity of Grove and Spring. I hadn’t heard about a bag of intestines.

annarbor dot coma also reported that a swan was deliberately murdered (when it wasn’t), that panhandlers are pretty cool (they really aren’t), and that Mark Maynard was gay and was thinking about a sex change operation!
For those who would like to know, I’ve had some very good progress on planning the park and trail area along Water Street. It looks like I have picked up some key, initial support. I am currently looking for a photographer and a landscape designer. Anybody out there?
I think this little story just goes to illustrate the need for this. If we can get a significant section of the Boarder to Boarder trail in place along the river, there is the potential to clean up a large swath of Ypsilanti. We can certainly use it. Nothing else has worked. I applaud our City leaders for thinking outside the box, and trying animal sacrifice. Hopefully God liked it.
It occurred to me today that it would be funny to flier downtown, seeking information on the whereabouts of my lost “bag of intestines.”
My dog is the one who found the bag of intestines. The whole scenario was completely disturbing – very Blue Velvet. After all these years this is the first follow-up I’ve gotten…
