[This was said to me on Saturday by Clementine, in Omena, Michigan, where we were camping. It was early in the morning, and she desperately wanted to break into a bag of sour cherry candies that some friends had given her. It was an audacious attempt on her part, which ultimately, I’m sad to say, failed.]
Totally quotable Clementine

Man, that’s a cute picture. Clever girl. And you’re mean. She said “just for today’. That makes complete sense.
Yes, and tomorrow we can use sawdust for candy!
She should know better than to look behind the curtain.
What a wonderful try. She thought long and hard about that and still no candy. You can’t be that mean.
She’s a brilliant kid. Something like that never would have occurred to me when I was her age. And, yes, I can be that mean. I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true.
My kids tried that once! I told them “How about we make a deal and we’ll have desert for dinner & dinner for desert instead?” They bought it, happily ate their flinstones and had strawberries for dinner :) (& salad for desert, lol)
