Lux Interior, lead singer of the Cramps, has died

I’m tired of saying goodbye to rock stars that I cared about.

“Garbageman” still plays in my head every time I see sanitation workers.

Elvis, Buddy Holly, Smith Evers, I’m damntired, too.

Which is why you got to die before me.

There were rumors of Lux’s death in the early nineties, supposedly a self-inflicted stab to the heart during an opium binge… turned out to be untrue. Is this one fo real?

What do you want, an autopsy photo?

Hell yah I want an autopsy photo. Lux sure as hell does. I never knew Lux out west, he was a bit before even my time but I saw him plenty when he was god of NYC. He was the most self-obsessed phony in the scene and we all loved him for it. Lux couldn’t do anything without a mirror. Kristy either. They were perfect. They made a lot us who’d sworn it off rethink marriage like some punk Ward and June. They both wanted the same thing and got it. They loved mirrors. Every photo shoot I know of they was looking at a mirror. In concert he’d tuck a little mirror behind and amp or monitor and play to it all show. Every picture you see of him is him looding in a mirror. He’d be in the jon for an hour before the show just staring and shooting shit. Punk was all about self and he took it way beyond all the miserable self hating shit. It made him a really nice guy which was rare around then. If you said you liked the set he’d talk to for an hour. Kristy would be hanging next to him. She wouldn’t say much but sometimes she’d be “I like your skirt” and it meant a lot. Like I said. Punk rocks mom and pop. I know he gets ripped on for ripping of Hasil and everyone else with a stage but he had great taste. He ripped off every good bit but didn’t hide it. He and Hasil were grew up on the same stuff or radio rock stars. Hasil loved lux and I think was confused by him. I saw Hasil come up to NYC a couple times to shows and as much as Lux imitated Hasil Hasil would imitate Lux. He came up one time in leather pants. It was like Lux had figured out to do what Hasil wanted to do and Hasil was still trying to learn it. You know, Hasil was trying to imitate Elvis and people and Lux is imitating Hasil and Iggy and people and getting famous and Hasil starts imitating Lux imating Hasil. That’s my take on the whole thing. He never had an original thought but that made him real. I don’t mean to make it sound like I was close to him. I never fucked him. I never even knew someone who fucked him. We all knew he and Kristy were big phonies. But they were mom and dad and they approved. It did something for me. End of story. For a while I have to admit I was totally into Beverly Hills 90210. It wasn’t might exact zip code but it was pretty much where I grew up so I’d watch it cause I kept waiting for somebody to really erupt. One night, there’s Lux on the show. I start clapping and shouting for him. That’s where he wanted to be. The man in the mirror finally made it to TV. Belly up.
