Design 99

I want to thank the folks at Model D for featuring Hamtramck’s very cool Design 99 in their most recent issue… Here’s the video. If you look closely, you can see my friend Steve Hughes, the man behind the terrific, little, toilet tank-sized magazine Stupor, standing awkwardly in someone’s bathroom… At least that’s who I think that is.

Hamtramck, in case you’re not from around here, is the second best town in all of Michigan, right after Ypsilanti. And, one of these days, I hope to build a monorail between the two.

I’m pretty sure the commuter rail line will actually drop you off slightly closer to Hamtramck than Tiger Stadium. It’d be interesting know if Hipsatramck was planning any connectors to their fair city.

As an aside, I agree that Hamtramck is the second best city in the state, but I prefer to rank us at 274th.

    1) I should thank you for introducing us to Steve because he does really nice work. We hired Design 99 and Hughes & Lynn to finish our attic and it is becoming awesome beyond belief. (The sweet tile work Mitch designed is in one of Steve’s rentals.)

    2) We have a connector. It’s called “DDOT”. It is possible to take the train here from A2 now if you want to.

    3) Model D is paid for by our state government, the same state government that is cutting support for police and fire services. There’s a street robbery here every other night, so be careful how you get pistol whipped or shot during your visit.

Indie galleries and pistol whippings form a beautiful symbiosis that create one of the few environments where urban hipsters can incubate and multiply.

Hello, My name is Erin Marquis. I’m working on a feature story about bloggers and citizen journalists in Detroit. I’m creating a radio piece that has the potential to play at several symposiums and perhaps NPR stations. I’m trying to qualify all these statements as much as possible because feature stories in the broadcast medium can sometimes fall before they have a chance to fly. I have produced similar stories before however, and this project will be aired at academic media symposiums this spring. If you are interested, you can contact me through Facebook to set up an interview time, or email me at emarquis@umd.umich.edu

    Thank you very much,
    Erin Marquis

Sorry, but I didn’t see your note before right now, Erin. I suspect it’s too late, but I’ll send you an email.

As for Ham Town, I just came back to this thread because I wanted to put in a plug for the Hamtramck Blowout (now called the Metro Times Blowout), which is taking place Friday, March 6 on and around Jos Campau. More info on the event, and the 200 bands, can be found here.
