banner ideas for downtown ypsi

Our friends at VG Kids have been hired to create new banners for along Michigan Avenue, in downtown Ypsi. Before they get started, though, they’re asking for community input. If you have an opinion, leave them a note… My suggestion would be a series on local heroes, which is was what we were hoping our Iggy Pop t-shirt project would evolve into. Our plan, when we made that first t-shirt, was to follow up with shirts featuring Elijah McCoy, Preston Tucker and Winsor McKay. All four were brilliant visionaries, and I think they represent what’s best about this little town of ours. We challenge convention. We create. We don’t just sit on our asses and consume… But no one hired me to create banners.

Marie Tharp, pioneering mapmaker of the ocean floor, was born in Ypsilanti in 1920:

A pioneer of modern oceanography, Tharp was the first to map the unseen topography of the ocean floor on a global scale. Her observations became crucial to the eventual acceptance of the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift in the earth sciences. Working with pens, ink and rulers, Tharp drew the underwater details, longitude degree by latitude degree, described by thousands of sonar readings taken by Columbia University researchers and others. Her maps have since become modern scientific and popular icons.

Isn’t Ypsi home to that Revolutionary War reenactor who rides around on a Segway? That would be great as a banner.

Ypsilanti: Realer than Ann Arbor, not as real as Detroit. Just right real.
