wooden show flyer

I was just in Ann Arbor, picking up our CSA share from Tantre Farm, and noticed this wooden show flyer screwed into a phone pole. Very cool.

Yeah, I saw this too. It’s down by where they’re filming that movie in Ann Arbor. You weren’t down there trolling for celebrities, were ya?

This one was near Kerrytown. The gig’s on Catherine street, which is where I lived when I was a student at UM. I’ve never seen the Pussy Pirates, but the Laserbeams of Boredom are pretty fucking awesome. It should be a good show… And, no, I’m not out looking for celebrities.

    Hmmm….

Laserbeams of Boredom must sound interesting live – probably better than the recordings on myspace that you linked to MM.

If I wasn’t being a snob I would say they sound sweet.

If I was being a snob I would say that they should listen to more Afro-beat and funk because they are close to sounding funky or even Kraftwerk-style funky but they’re sort of discombobulated as is. Although I know that is probably their thing, I would personally dig it more if it were a little more danceable and a little less stoner/experimental.

That being said, with a little more work, they have a unique sound to build on. A problem that arises though is that I can’t help contemplate their name while I listen to the music; it’s sort of distracting. But what a great name.

Overall I am glad that I checked them out via this recommendation, and I would defintely be pumped to see them live.

laserbeams is one guy — craig johnson — playing a full drum kit and a bass guitar at the same time. the recordings are alright, but the live show is anywhere from great to downright amazing.

a lot of the stuff coming out of the bare wire/worm farm/dreamland theater circle right now is equally great, btw. i recommend almus magnus, ambit, craig and ethan’s various bands (amoeba kids/laserbeams/liquid music ensemble), holly mae and the painted room, and james cornish. good puppet shows, too!

(full disclosure: i play as part of spooky spooky washington and juniper baby, so i admit i may be biased.)

Pussy Pirates is an incredibly lame name for a band.

In their defense, pussy could mean, “containing or full of pus.” At least that’s what the dictionary says.

No one has noticed yet, but the positions of the real screws holding up the flyer match exactly the ones in the eyes of Bob… It’s freaky.

In college, my band used to brand our our gig information into pieces of meat and nail them them to the doors of newspaper writers.
