brother love and brother hate

It just occurred to me, as I was sitting here cleaning my teeth after dinner, that, while I’ve talked a lot here on the site about the film Night of the Hunter over the years, I don’t think I’ve ever posted links to clips. Well, I thought that I’d remedy that tonight. What you see above are two clips of the same scene. One is from Charles Laughton’s Night of the Hunter. The other is from Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. I’m not telling which is which, so you’ll have to call that old film historian friend if you want to know… I’m thinking about teaching Clementine how to deliver this speech. I think video of her talking about “Brother Love” and “Brother Hate” that would be a good contribution to the YouTube meme.

As for Night of the Hunter, if you’re interested, the whole thing is on YouTube. You can find the trailer here, and the first part of the movie here. I’d rather that your first time seeing it was with me, on the banks of the Huron river, but I suspect that might still be some time off…. More on that later.

I didn’t know that Robert Mitchum had tatoos on his fingers (cool … just like Carlie Manson) and that he was light-skinned, like Barak.

I also didn’t know how Spike Lee paid his rent, until I recognized him in the clip on his way to deliver pizzas.

I didn’t click on the links … so I’ll take a wild guess that the B&W clip is NOT from the Spike Lee movie. I’m guessing Spike would use himself delivering pizzas to save some money on actors and stuff. That’s cool. Spike is def cool. What do I win, if I’m right?)

Ah. That’s what the left hand is for. I always wondered what to do with the extra one…

The left hand is for clapping in encouragement.

As for what you win, Ed, I think it’s either a car or an inflatable crocodile. You won’t know until Oprah takes the stage at the Fullfreight Banjo event and tells you to look under your seat.

Sometimes Mark uses his left hand for love so it feels like a stranger…
