I haven’t talked with many of our retailers since the campaign launched, but my sense is that it’s had a positive impact on business. Word on the street is that sales are slightly better than last year at this time, which, given the state of the Michigan economy, is probably better than most people would have expected… At any rate, if you haven’t completed your holiday shopping yet, I’d ask that you check out our local merchants and give them a shot. And, if you’ve already done your shopping, and still feel like helping out your local merchants, I’d ask that you pick up some of our of Shop Ypsi brochures and distribute them at work, to your friends, etc. At last count, I think we still had about 500 copies left. … behind the counter at Cafe Luwak …
What does THAT mean?!!
Yah, next to the you know what magazines!
… or is this more of the Ypsi candle hidden under the basket trick?
(Old trick.)
I received a delightful handjob from one of your local businesswomen yesterday. I was going to do it myself at home but then I remembered this buy local initiative.
There’s going to be a huge hole left when Quinn’s goes away. I was hoping to do most of my shopping local but with almost everything now gone at Quinn’s it has been difficult. They were great for mom and grandma gifts.
Not sure if this belongs on the this “buy local” post or the “growing hope” post but … for those still looking for their annual calendar, Ypsi’s own Growing Hope has pretty, fruit-filled calendars available at the Ypsi Co-op.
They’re by the register on the counter. Not sure what’s behind the counter at Co-op, EgP, but my guess is it’s completely natural…
Hee, hee … The 2008 Organic Women Calendars!
This isn’t holiday shopping per se, but if you need a ladder, as we did, I suggest visiting the Michigan Ladder Co. on E. Forest. Go to the front door, tell them what type you want, and you’re likely to get a very good deal on a very good locally produced ladder, of whatever type you want. And you get to be in one of the oldest manufacturing facilities still operating on its original site in the country.
It’s not to early to start planning a new Show Local campaign.
The US government is near finalizing plans to send each of us tax payers about $600 ($1200 for couples). The government wants us to spend that money to stimulate the economy.
Why shouldn’t we spend that money locally?
Crank it up again Mark and Jim.
Bumping this up to the top because I don’t see that anyone saw it before it fell of the recent comment list.
Good idea, John. Let’s add that to the list of things to discuss on the 21st.
Another idea would be to ask people to contribute toward the Solar City Hall project.
Perhaps out of $1200 per family there’s enough $ to support both ideas.
List of ideas to discuss on the 21st??? I thought there was going to be NO agenda.
No formal agenda, John… We all have our own agendas though, don’t we?
Oh, not me. I’m a blank slate with no opinions of my own.
