According to a student at George Washington University, after a speaking engagement yesterday, Al Gore confided that he is indeed thinking of running for President in 2008. And, apparently, it’s not the only instance of him hinting about a presidential run these last few days. I don’t know how long he can walk this tightrope before he starts pissing people off, but, so far, it seems to be working in his favor. I was out with some pretty well connected political friends tonight, and all that anyone could talk about was the possibility of Gore getting in. Consensus seems to be that he’ll hold back for at least a few more months before tossing his hat into the ring, but I don’t think he’ll be able to stay out that long. At the rate things are intensifying around him, I don’t see how he can go much more than a month before he starts to lose people. Right now, however, I only get the sense that the tide is building in his favor… One thing’s for sure, the Republicans aren’t just sitting back, waiting for him to announce. They’re ramping up the campaign against him right now.
I think it might be time to start laying the groundwork for a Michigan for Gore campaign.

Gore has also said recently that he would not suggest that we puruse impeachment.

I can see how impeachment might be a distraction, and I can see how this might be the right thing to say politically, but something in me wanted to hear him talk about this administration being held accountable.
It might make more sense to Gore if he waited until his first day in the Oval Office to order a full investigation of the former regime. He could make their lives hell for a few years even if no serious indictments ever come down. And that would just be fun to watch.
Gore/Obama ’08 … says so on my lapel button.
I chatted with some people today at the Ann Arbor farmers’ market who were gathering names for a Draft Gore petition. During the course of the conversation, they said something that I found pretty interesting. They said that four years ago, when folks had tried to mount a draft Gore campaign, they had been contacted by Gore’s people, who requested they take down their websites, etc. So far, however, no one has asked them the same thing this time around…. Interesting, isn’t it?
