A few months ago, a copy shop clerk here refused to take cash: he told me that if I wanted a couple of ten cent copies, I had to put them on my credit card. I went elsewhere.
In response to Doug’s comment, it is my understanding that businesses have to accept American currency if they operate in this country.
In this case, the clerk told me I needed to buy a card to operate the copy machine, and that the machine that dispensed those cards didn’t take cash. As I said, I went elsewhere. The law often means nothing; many security guards have told me that all citizens are required by law to carry ID at all times. Not true, unless you’re driving.
But I suspect many Americans want less freedom, at least for others.
If you have nothing to hide, there shouldn’t be any reason to worry, right? I personally can’t wait for the day when the government knows exactly how I spend every single penny. Just imagine how much better they can serve me if they truly understand what I like and what motivates me. It’s so exciting that I can’t contain my joy.
Probably soon cash will be branded as unkewl; users will be mocked as Luddites and low-lifes, still pulling out that old wad of ugly greenbacks. What, you don’t want the government to know your every purchase? Where’s your tinfoil hat, loser?
