an e.m.u. ambassador of good will?

Is there even a remote possibility that this story from today’s “Michigan Daily” could be true? It has to be an early April Fool’s column, right?

Here’s the story:

Police have been unable to locate a woman who entered the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house without permission on Thursday and began to masturbate on a couch.

While fraternity members were eating in the dining room, a woman entered the house’s living room, took off her clothes and started masturbating, said LSA junior Dan Nye, the president of the Washtenaw Avenue fraternity.

No one saw the woman enter the house or knew how she got in. Nye said she could have entered through the front door, which was left propped open while it was being repaired.

Fraternity members asked the woman to leave the house, but she refused and continued masturbating for about half an hour, Nye said.

When members asked the woman if she was all right, she casually replied that she was fine, he said. The woman was talking on her cell phone at one point, said LSA sophomore Adam Bayard, a member of the fraternity.

She walked out of the front door wearing only a thigh-length black coat after a fraternity member called the police, Nye said. When police arrived minutes later, the woman had already left.

According to a police report, the woman was between 20 and 30 years old, had short brown hair and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

“Obviously, she was very disturbed,” Nye said. “It was not how a normal person would respond to people.”

The woman told fraternity members that her name was Melissa and she was a student at Eastern Michigan University, according to the police report.

Fraternity members said they will throw out two couches in the living room because of the incident, Nye said.

Police said the break-in appeared to be an isolated incident.

My favorite part was reading the comments left by “Daily” readers. Most people, it seems, think she came there to either engage the entire frat in sex, or lure them into a situation where they could be accused of rape, “like what happened at Duke.” Someone said she was probably “a feminist.” Quite a few people took the opportunity to call the men of the frat gay. And, most of the people that think the story is fake don’t think that because of what the woman did, but because the guys said that they were getting rid of the couches. Most also thought that she was probably ugly.

I’m looking at a photo of the frat brothers now and I’m finding it hard to imagine that they, as a group, would drive anyone to frenzied masturbation. So, if I had to bet, I’d say I’m 95% sure it’s mental illness. Part of me (5% apparently) is holding out hope, however, that it’s someone’s terrible idea of performance art… Or, I wonder if they’ve just been Punk’d… Nothing surprises me these days.

[Thanks to Kevin for sending the link.]

And how cool was it that she was talking on a cell phone through most of it? That was my favorite detail… If I had more time, I’d call the frat and ask them what she was talking about.

And, I don’t want to be an alarmist, but maybe it’s the couches. Has anyone thought of that? Maybe Ann Arbor City Council was right when they set out to ban them a few years ago. Maybe couches are inherently evil.

help support carl levin

Michigan Senator Carl Levin is coming up for reelection in 2008, and he’s just kicked off a new fundraising effort. I can’t seem to find it anywhere now, but I seem to recall not too long ago that he opened up his campaign war chest and contributed significantly to the campaigns of other Democrats that were running in close races. I think that speaks to the kind of guy that Levin is, and I’d hope that at least a couple of you out there would consider contributing a few dollars. March 31 marks the first reporting date in this election cycle, and it’s imperative that we show the Republicans that he’s got broad public support. If we don’t want Republican teams on the ground here in Michigan, trying to take his Senate seat, we need to show them right now that we not only like him, but that we’re willing to put our money where our mouths are. I don’t usually make personal appeals like this (even when it’s my own stuff I’m selling), but I feel passionately about Carl Levin and I think that he’s earned our support. (Yes, it does piss me off that he won’t get behind the raising of mandatory fuel efficiency standards, but I try not to think about that too much.) So, do me a favor, and don’t just assume that he’ll win because he’s honest, popular, etc. I know it’s unlikely that he’d lose, but we can’t afford to take that risk. We need Carl Levin in the Senate.

assorted stuff

We’ve got serious things to talk about tonight, like impeachment, punk rock and the Klan’s reaction to the new sequel to “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle,” but, before we get started, I was wondering if any designers out there in the audience might want to take a shot at designing a t-shirt for my new band, which is either going to be called Ball Hair Golem Destroyer of Motherboards, or Pizza Forever. (The design should work for either.) All submissions are due by tomorrow, midnight. A photo of the winning designer and his/her design will be prominently displayed here at MM.com for some as yet to be determined period of time.

Service problems due to Taiwanese corporate espionage

Guest Blogger: Dr Cherry
Lately, you may have experienced problems accessing the site or sending us email. I offer my apologies and believe I’ve finally isolated the problem.

It started when Taiwanese corporate spies stole the secret formula for the electrolyte material inside electronics capacitors. Apparently, they failed to get the entire formula and as a result, millions of poor-quality capacitors have turned up in consumer electronics, including computer motherboards.

orange taylor and e.m.u. on trial

Orange Taylor, the EMU student accused of raping and murdering a fellow student right before Christmas break, just had his first day in court. Not much in the coverage was unexpected, but I did find it interesting that, according to the ABC affiliate in Grand Rapids, “an EMU Detective said he had a gut feeling this was a crime scene” when he first entered the dormitory room of Laura Dickinson. Leaving aside the fact that, yes, practically anyone who finds the corpse of a dead young woman, with a pillow pressed over her face, showing signs of having been raped, would get a “gut feeling” that something wasn’t quite right, I found it interesting because, to my knowledge, it is the first time that an EMU employee has gone on the record stating that, from the first moment the body was discovered, foul play was suspected… You’ll recall that the University, up until this point, has maintained that foul play was not expected at first — hence their ‘don’t worry, be happy, and have a wonderful holiday’ email notification to staff and students.

As we all now know, if it does become clear that the administration had reason to suspect that a murder had taken place on campus and not warned the community, it would be a violation of the Clery Act, so it’s a big deal to suggest that someone on the EMU payroll suspected foul play from the outset. The “Ann Arbor News,” who covered the same hearing, reported the exchange a bit differently though. Here’s a clip from their report:

…EMU Detective Lt. Jeffrey Nesmith testified that Dickinson was found dead on the floor, lying on a blanket and sheet, with her head at the foot of the bed. She had a pillow over her face, he said, and her arms were outstretched, one under the bed.

Nesmith said he almost immediately called the Michigan State Police crime lab to document the scene. “I was trying to determine if there were any signs of foul play, anything obvious about what happened,” Nesmith testified. “There was a pillow over the head of a person on the floor”…

If anyone has a transcript of what was actually said, I’d be interested in seeing it. I’ve read the “Ann Arbor News” piece a half dozen times now, and I still can’t figure out what exactly Nesmith was trying to convey. It sounds like he’s saying that he called in the Michigan State Police crime lab because he couldn’t determine whether or not foul play was involved, which, excuse me, sounds a bit too overly rehearsed… Of course foul play was suspected.

(This is an aside, but does EMU have Detectives? According to the EMU public safety website, they have “18 police officers, one crime prevention officer, four sergeants and three administrators“. Are the four sergeants considered detectives? I know it’s a small point, but I’m curious. I never think of EMU as having Detectives, at least not in the sense that I think of them.)

And, while we’re on the subject, if someone hasn’t already filed a FOIA request for the emails between EMU President John Fallon and Jim Vick, the EMU VP for Student Affairs, for the period immediately after Dickinson’s body was discovered, they really should. I suspect the results would shed a lot of light on what was suspected and when.
