water street forum scheduled for tomorrow evening

The evening of Tuesday, February 13, the City of Ypsilanti will be hosting a public forum on the subject of the once-again-stalled Water Street redevelopment project. The meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 7:30, will take place at the Senior Citizens Center (1015 North Congress Street). According to the City’s website, this event, which is being hosted by the Planning and Development Department, is being put on for the following reasons:

…The purpose of the meeting is for city representatives to provide information about the status of this significant redevelopment project and to outline efforts being taken to move it forward. The city also seeks validation of the development concept, suggestions for refining it, and — equally as important — feedback about what is not desired on the site…

More information, as well as contact information for Planning and Development Department Director Karen Hart can be found here.

I should also point out, in case it’s not evident, that this is not the YpsiVotes forum on Water Street that myself and other volunteers have been working on. The future of that particular forum will be decided after seeing what the City presents (and doesn’t present) tomorrow night… Stay tuned.

Hopefully, we’ll be surprised. It is possible, after all, that they’ll meet us there with open books in hand, showing us exactly what’s been spent to-date, sharing the details as to how much is due when, and letting us know exactly who they’ve been speaking with…. But maybe I read sarcasm into Ed’s note when none was intended. Maybe he meant that we should bring shovels becuase there’s going to be so much information shared.

For what it’s worth, I predict that my fellow Ypsilantians will be like sharks on a whale carcass tomorrow night.

Surely Ed meant that shovels would be needed because of the snowfall we are expecting. There could be no other reason.

It’s too bad the City didn’t take a hint from the YpsiVotes folks and scatter question boxes around town for two weeks before the meeting so folks could submit questions about Water Street. (sigh)

    Cheers!

We may still do our forum, Steve. And, if we do, there will be a concentrated effort to poll the people of Ypsi both for their questions and for their ideas on how we should go forward. We’ve actually got a pretty good plan drawn up – we were just thrown a bit off by the City coming forward with their own “official” forum.

I’m no city planner and definitely no kind of savvy economist, but I think a good way to use that land–low-lying and in need of deep-earth cleanup–would be to have raised wooden walkways, a(nother) park, inspired plantings. Make it a lovely place to pass by on the way into downtown, a great place to be. Then take this urge to construct and rebuild Paradise Manor, and other spots, as solid, decent housing. And concentrate on downtown commerce with the buildings already in place, some of them charming old structures that need love and attention and enterprise, several that deserve to be replaced.
