the sad legacy of john mccain

John “Straight Talk” McCain is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the Discovery Institute later this month. As the folks at Think Progress remind us, not only is this an anti-science Creationist organization, but:

(Their) main financial backer, savings and loan heir Howard Ahmanson, spent 20 years on the board of the Chalcedon Foundation, “a theocratic outfit that advocates the replacement of American civil law with biblical law.”

As a former admirer of McCain, it makes me incredibly sad to watch him end his career pathetically pandering to the radical right just so that he can have a shot at the presidency. He had an opportunity at the Republican National Convention several years ago to tell the world the truth about George W. Bush, the man whose campaign had spread lies about him fathering a (gasp!) non-white child, but instead he embraced him. From that point forward, it’s been a slow and steady stumble toward the bottom for McCain. He’s sold his soul. Fuck, he even voted in favor of torture. There’s nothing left of him now but the carcass.

I’d suggest that he was never worthy of admiration. It was just that his previous line of bullshit – the kind of bullshit it takes to become and stay the Senator from Arizona – is less disgusting.

I hear you, Mark. I agree. McCain stands for nothing any more. The best he can do is wriggle like the snake he is.

It’s strange to see someone so desperate to be president. He will say and do anything, gladly align himself with the biggest creeps…all for the chance to hold that office. I see the same thing from Gore and Clinton. I might be back to supporting Ralph. He and Kucinich are the only human beings in the race and they’ve been portrayed as crazies by the media.

Eff J. McCain! Truly sold his soul.. I’ve liked Kucinich from his earliest days– He votes as his own man, often pissing off his fellow dems… Stood up and called the Patriot B.S, among other things. I say go ahead and run, in 2008– Even in all likelihood failing, but I won’t label him “Ralphish” unless he tries again in 2012….

On his current tour, McCain will also be speaking in favor abstinence-only education.

And, for what it’s worth, I know how to spell “abstinance” correctly. It’s just that the system, for some reason, has “abstinance” (spelled correctly) on the black-list. I guess there’s a huge problem with abstinance spammers.

But wait… That’s not all… Now McCain is saying that Roe v. Wade should be overturned.

This just keeps getting better and better.

Mark, remind me to show you how to remove words from your blacklist.

I’m OK as long as they stay away from ball-shaving. I just thought that it was odd that abstinance was on their list. I wonder if prohibition’s on there too.

Can any physics people out there weigh in on the hadron collider? Is there any real danger here or are the skeptics just not as smart as the people conducting this experiment? Is this as awesome as it seems like it is? Pretty amazing stuff…

(I thought this old post on John McCain talking at the Discovery Institute would be a fitting place to ask these questions)
