e howard hunt dead at 88

What with the Libby trial and everything else, I didn’t even notice that former CIA man and Nixon “plumber” E. Howard Hunt had finally been sucked screaming into the bowels of hell. Hunt, probably best known to most because of his role in the Watergate burglary, will always be that loveable little tramp to me — you know, that one that orchestrated the Kennedy assassination.

If you haven’t read it before, Slate had a good interview with Hunt a few years ago. Check it out if you get a chance. Here’s the exchange most relevant to what we’re talking about right now:

Slate: I know there is a conspiracy theory saying that David Atlee Phillips—the Miami CIA station chief—was involved with the assassination of JFK.

Hunt: [Visibly uncomfortable] I have no comment.

Slate: I know you hired him early on, to work with you in Mexico, to help with Guatemala propaganda.

Hunt: He was one of the best briefers I ever saw.

Slate: And there were even conspiracy theories about you being in Dallas the day JFK was killed.

    Hunt: No comment.
