my little loss

My personal losses in Hurricane Katrina are so minimal that I hesitate to even mention them… especially as there are still friends, and friends of friends, that I don’t know the whereabouts of… but I thought that perhaps some of you might be interested to know that all the master tapes for the “music” recorded by my band, Prehensile Monkey-Tailed Skink, in the early 90’s were most likely lost in Mr. Quintron’s Spellcaster Lounge, which is now several feet under water. At least that’s what my sources tell me… The good news is that Mr. Quintron, Ms. Pussycat, and Antoinette K-Doe (of the nearby Mother In-Law Lounge) are all alive and well… As for the loss of the Skink library, just consider it a little glimmer of sunlight through an otherwise darkened sky.

You are passing along unverified second-hand rumors for which the original source is unreliable, and the reports from your “sources” made that clear.

If you had conferred with your “sources” before publishing, they would have tried to talk you out of it because the rumors are unconfirmed and also your post seems incredibly shallow and callous, and could reflect poorly on everyone named.

    Shoddy journalism.

I’m sorry if anyone found my post callous. I didn’t mean it to be, and I think that I was pretty up-front when I said that my loss pales compared to the losses of others… And I don’t really see how it reflects badly on those mentioned. I’d talked about Mrs. K-Doe a few days ago and linked to an article about her being missing. I thought that people would like to know that she was alive (a fact that Quintron, who happens to be a firend of hers, mentions on his site).

As for the rumors of the tapes being there, I said that they were rumors. I didn’t present it as fact… Look, I just thought that it was an interesting little side-note to break up all the other unbelievably sad stuff that I’d been writing about. Anyway, I’m sorry that you found it to be shoddy journalism. A good journalist, I suppose, would have contacted some of the people involved and asked them – but I think we both agree that that would have been extremely tasteless given the circumstances. The bottom line is that they’re just tapes, and, in the whole scheme of things, they don’t really matter. Sorry if that wasn’t clear in my post.

One more clarification – I wasn’t being serious when I said that Skink sucked. They were the best damned band that the world had ever seen.

Saints be praised that Quintron and Ms. Pussycat and friends are still alive. I’m sorry to hear of all the tapes and puppets and equipment that were lost to the flood. I sincerely hope all those touched by this devastation are able to rebuild — I hope that a newer and even more dumfounding Spellcaster Lodge springs forth from the hallowed Nawlins soil.
