A friend of Linette’s and mine just called from Colombia, where she’s been for the past week, caring for her father, who, while visiting relatives in Bogota was injured in a traffic accident. He’s presently in a coma, and our friend has essentially put her life on hold to be with him. On the phone just now, Linette asked what we could do, and our friend only mentioned one thing. She said that she’d like to have our help finding an inexpensive calling card that she could use there. (However she’s been calling relatives here in the U.S., it’s been costing $.50 a minute.) Linette and I are both searching the web now, trying to compare plans and sort out the ones that don’t seem reputable. So far, we’ve found quite a few companies that sell inexpensive airtime to Columbia, but the rates we’ve found in the reverse direction aren’t nearly as affordable. So, I thought that I’d ask you… If you know of an inexpensive way to call from Bogota to the U.S., let me know. It would mean a lot to Linette and me if we could help our friend with this.

I think this is a job for Chris Bird. Are you still out there Chris?
Only idea I have is, “try an Asian grocery?” Having lived in or around grad student family housing at two universities, I can tell you that’s probably the place to find the cheapest outgoing phone cards – though I don’t have any data on reputability – and it might be a source for the reverse direction.
If she is in Bogota, I would hope that the US Embassy would offer some assistance given that her father is so ill. Has she tried them? Whenever I have been in a jam overseas they usually have been helpful. I hope that her father recovers soon and am sorry that she has having such a horribe experience.
Does she have access to a computer w/ internet capabilities? I guess not. Oh yeah, and the embassy thing would only work if she is american.
Thank you for your thoughts. I appreciate your help.
