on using a club to beat them

I mentioned the other day that the book club would be reading Saul Alinsky’s classic book on organizing, “Rules for Radicals” this month. What I didn’t mention, however, was when and where we’d be meeting… Well, I’ve just heard from the folks at the Michigan Avenue branch of the Ypsi Public Library, and they’ve agreed to have us back… So, unless you hear differently between now and then, we will be meeting in the downstairs conference room of the library next Thursday evening, April 14, from 7:00 to 9:00. (There’s free parking behind the building.)

As the last few meetings have been running from 10 to 15 people, I don’t anticipate that we’ll be over capacity, but, just in case, send me a note and let me know that you’re planning to attend, if you haven’t been to one of the last few meetings. (I just want to be ready in case we suddenly swell to 30.)

Also, while we’re on the subject of the club, I wanted to mention that this month we’ll also be choosing the next few books in the series. (I’m not sure how we’ll be deciding this yet, but I’m thinking that whatever we do there will be the opportunity for everyone to nominate titles, and then there will be some kind of voting/ranking… If you have an idea as to how we should handle it, let me know.) As for possible nominees, I’ve run some of my ideas by you in the past, and you’ve also contributed quite a few other titles… If you can think of something that hasn’t been mentioned yet, however, please leave a comment and I’ll be sure to add it to the list.

One title I’d like to add is Susan Jacoby’s “Freethinkers : A History of American Secularism.” I don’t know that it would be the best choice to follow “What’s the Matter with Kansas,” “Don’t Think of an Elephant,” and “Rules for Radicals,” but it’s a book that I’d like to read and doubt I would otherwise… Anyway, let me know if you have other ideas.

See you next Thursday.
