firefighters tricked into military service?

Could someone please either confirm or deny this story that I read at the Caliblog site just now? I don’t see how it could possibly be legit, but I suppose you never know these days… Here’s the section I’m wondering about. It’s taken out of context, but it should still make sense:

I guess I got to thinking about all this because the night we had the party, a girl was telling us how her older brother had signed up to be a firefighter — but apparently there is some fine print that forced her brother to be trained as a “firefighter” by the military… then after his training was complete, they up and shipped him off to Iraq, and guess what he spent several months doing there. Fighting fires? No, not really, not at all actually — he guarded the oil pipelines and got shot at day-in, day-out. Luckily he is now back home, but they want him to go back — she said he refuses to go back; he’d rather go to jail than stand guard outside an oil reserve.

Am I completely out of touch, or, if this is legitimate, is this a huge story? Could we really be conscripting people under false pretences and dragging them off to Iraq like this? Have we gotten that desperate?

I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but our freind Hillary Cherry thinks that perhaps we might find a few clues in this firefighting thread.
