hitting them where it hurts

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, the conservative-owned and operated media company, the Sinclair Broadcast Group has mandated that each of the 62 television stations in its portfolio preempt regularly scheduled prime-time programming in the days prior to the election, to show an anti-Kerry “documentary” created by our old friends, the Flotilla of Douchebags. As these 62 Sinclair-owned stations reach a quarter of all American homes (many of the stations are ABC affiliates), the ramifications, it’s feared, could be considerable. While the liberals among us have been very careful to point out that this proposed activity probably would, and should, be allowable under the First Amendment, they have also been quick to point out that this is the kind of thing we can expect to see more of now that we’re allowing a greater degree of media consolidation… Some, however, have decided to fight fire with fire. Groups like StopSinclair.org have jumped into the fray to say that if Sinclair can air clearly partisan propaganda over the public’s airwaves, then they can hold the company’s shareholders and advertisers accountable. Instead of just complaining about consolidation, and threatening slander suits, they’re mobilizing people in all of Sinclair’s markets to monetize the fight. And, as it was just announced on the DailyKos site, it’s working. Sylvan Learning Centers has announced that they will be the first company pulling their ads from Sinclair stations. Others will surely follow.

A shy friend, who doesn’t like leaving comments, wanted me to tell you that you can also send letters to Sinclair through the DNC site at:
