the quotable ann coulter and other things of interest

USA Today no doubt thought that theyd scored a PR coup when the signed on leggy Republican narcissist Anne Coulter to cover the Democratic National Convention. Unfortunately, upon receipt of her first column from Boston, the realization hit the USA Today editors that she was out of her fucking mind. Heres a brief clip from the Coulter column that did not run:

As for the pretty girls, I can only guess that its because liberal boys never try to make a move on you without the UN Security Council’s approval. Plus, its no fun riding around in those dinky little hybrid cars. My pretty-girl allies stick out like a sore thumb amongst the corn-fed, no make-up, natural fiber, no-bra needing, sandal-wearing, hirsute, somewhat fragrant hippie chick pie wagons they call “women” at the Democratic National Convention.

One wonders if Michael Moore, who will be covering the Republican National Convention for USA Today, will follow the trail lit by Coulter, perhaps discussing in detail the feeling of superiority he and his attractive male friends get when subjected to the teaming masses of ugly Republicans in New York.

While were on the subject of conservative commentary, Id also like to link to an article in the National Review tonight. While you might not agree with the central tenants of the article (that Bush was right to go into Iraq, and that the end always justifies the means), I thought the author, Michael Ledeen, raised some interesting points when discussing the complexities of going to war against an ideology, as opposed to a state. Specifically, I was interested in the comparison he makes between the ideologies of Nazism and radical Islam. It isnt something that Id considered before.

Lastly, I stumbled across a very good piece on the Boston Free Speech Zone. I found it particularly salient after having just listened to Ted Kennedys speech at the convention, which drew upon several of the same historic references. Anyway, heres a clip:

I was recently able to examine the so called “Free Speech Zone” located near the Fleet Center in Boston, MA at the site of the Democratic National Convention. I walked around the outside perimeter, and I walked around inside of it.

What I saw was an absolute abomination, not only to the eye, but also to the very spirit of our nation. This cage should never be torn down, and should be preserved with a museum built around it to signify just how low we as a nation have fallen. This area and the surrounding land was once the birth site of democracy, patriotism, and freedom. This sacred ground has now been sullied with this contraption and it’s significance.

Unfortunately, I havent yet been able to find images of the Boston Free Speech Zone yet. Im going back to look now.

And heres a thought. Do you think that Ann Coulter might be persuaded to cover the convention for MM.com now that shes been terminated by USA Today? As much as I find her brand of over-the-top hate speech detestable, I do feel as though she has a right to be heard (by a very small audience like mine).

As for Coulter, I hope that she can stay in character for the long haul. It really upset me to see Arianna Huffington give up after a few years of solid effort, and I don’t think I can take that kind of disappointment again.

UPDATE: More information on the Boston Free Speech Zone is available at Save Our Civil Liberties dotorg.

martha, martha, martha

I just happened across this article by Mollie Ivins and thought that it was worth sharing because it illustrates what an utterly self-involved and clueless bitch Martha Stewart is. Heres the quote concerning Matha:

We cannot let pass without salute Martha Stewart’s remarks after being sentenced to five months in prison. In the long history of amazing things said by people in peculiar circumstances, you must admit, this ranks right up there. “There are many, many good people who have gone to prison,” she observed. “Look at Nelson Mandela.”

I haven’t done a Google search yet, but I’m sure that Martha wasn’t the first one to point out the obvious correlation between her predicament and that of the selfless black civil rights hero Nelson Mandela. I mean, its so obvious.

While were on the subject of unbelievably fucked up news stories that blur the lines of race, heres a great one concerning the the hidden white roots of the black conservative movement in the US This is how the story starts. Its my favorite lead-in of the week.

“Black Conservative to Rebut NAACP Leader’s Remarks in C-SPAN Interview,” read the press release from Project 21, an organization of conservative African-Americans.

I had read in Reuters that Kweisi Mfume, president of the NAACP, had called groups like Project 21 “make-believe black organizations,” and a “collection of black hustlers” who have adopted a conservative agenda in return for “a few bucks a head.”

So I tuned into C-SPAN with interest to hear what a leading voice in the black conservative movement had to say. But then a funny thing happened: the African-American spokesperson for Project 21 caught a flat on the way to the studio, and the group’s director had to fill in. And he was white.

Of course, in this colorblind society we live in, it really doesnt matter. White businessmen running African American political organizations, lily-white celebrities equating themselves with civil rights martyrs, it just doesn’t matter any more. It would appear that weve finally come to the place in history that Martin Luther King dreamed about. Doesnt it feel great?

convention blues

Im watching the democratic national convention and lamenting the fact that Im not a better writer. If Id tried harder, Im thinking, I might have had a shot at being one of the bloggers invited to cover the events in Boston. Instead, I wasted my time going on and on about pubic grooming and the bathroom habits of indie filmmakers So now Im just sitting here with Clementine, listening to the speeches of Al Gore and Jimmy Carter, and feeling like a schmuck.

If youd like to hear the firsthand accounts of the convention by my more respected contemporaries in the Blogosphere, you can check out Convention Bloggers dotcom.

Maybe Ill go back through the MM.com archives tonight, strike all the self-indulgent and otherwise stupid stuff (90% by my estimation), and set my sites on 2008. It would be good, I think, to be respected, and to be a part of history.

After all, it’s time I start thinking about the legacy that Im leaving Clementine.
