bush christ in leather
I just received the following note from an anonymous reader.

The following email really makes me want to throw up. I received it from my sister in law. My brother is unfortunately in the army and is in Iraq helping out with operation get more oil. Thanks to your L. Ron Hubbard link , I recognize this for what it is: a crude attempt to deify His Holiness, Prez Bushie. I can almost guarantee that there will soon be a follow-up email where the soldiers hand miraculously grows back. If you put any part of this egregious hagiographical fragment on your blog or anywhere else, please dont print my name with it. I live too close to CIA HQ as it is theyd probably send the black helicopters to my house and Id be disappeared. In going through my email correspondence you, Mr. Maynard, would be noted as a potential traitor!

This sort of paranoid thought process is what happens when you stay at work too long on a Friday. Goodbye. Im going home now.

Heres the e-mail he was forwarding:

At a recent Soldiers Breakfast held at Redstone Arsenal, AL, Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) Jack Tilley shared the following story. (The incident was recorded by James Henderson, with the U.S. Army Redstone Huntsville Chaplain Association Chapter.

He -(SMA Jack Tilley)- described a recent visit to our wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington that I (Chaplain Henderson) will never forget.

“The Special Forces soldier had lost his right hand and had suffered severe wounds of his face and side of his body. As SMA Tilley described, how do you honor such a soldier, showing respect without offending? What can you say or do in such a situation that will encourage and uplift? How do you shake the right hand of a soldier who just lost his? Finally he told how he acted as though the man had a hand, taking his wrist as though it were his hand and speaking encouragement to him.

But he said there was another man in that group of visitors who had even brought his wife with him to visit the wounded who knew exactly what to do. This man reverently took this soldier’s stump of a hand in both of his hands, bowed at the bedside and prayed for him. When he stood from praying he bent over and kissed the man on the head and told him he loved him.

What a powerful expression of love for one of our wounded heroes! And what a beautiful Christ-like example! What kind of man would kneel in such humility and submission to the Living God of the Bible?

It was George W. Bush, President of the United States and Commander in Chief of our Armed forces, a true leader.

Its amazing to me that someone would construct such a fable. Its more amazing, however, that idiots around the country would perpetuate it, forwarding it to their friends and family as though it offered some proof as to the upstanding character of our president. I mean I can accept the guy as a former alcoholic and cocaine user. I realize that people make mistakes in their youth and learn from them. I think its going quite a bit too far, however, to recreate him as Jesus Christ in human form. Jesus wouldnt be snorting coke in a frat house. He also wouldnt be sending people to war. And thats the most ironic thing about this e-mail. It paints Bush as a Christ-figure, praying at the bedside of the injured young man (you can practically see the golden Touched By an Angel glow around him), while neglecting to mention the fact that he, Bush, was also the man who sent him in to war. I think thats where the Christ analogy starts to fall apart for me.

On the subject of Christ, heres a little something from our friend, Douglas Skinner. Its an article on a new theory that suggests Christ was gay. I considered tagging a link to this article on to e-mail quoted above, and then forwarding it out to some folks. Right when it got to the part about Bush there, next to the young soldiers bed, looking at him like Christ, I would have linked over to the, Christ was Gay article. That kind of makes the whole story more palatable to me He was just Christ-like in that he wanted some hot man-on-man action.

i want my w.m.d.

Theres lots of stuff in the news today about Weapons of Mass Destruction and the fact that we still havent been able to find any in Iraq. People are beginning to ask questions. Some apparently feel as though we, the American people, were manipulated into this war with exaggerated claims as to the immediate threat we were under. In case you dont remember the rhetoric leading up the war, theres a great chronological list of quotes relating to the danger posed to the US by Saddam Husseins weapons of mass destruction here.

Wait but whats this? Well, it looks as though weapons of mass destruction may have finally been found after all! I can’t believe I doubted our administration, even for a second.

drawing of paco

I am trying to get a photo of Paco, the bottom-jaw-less dog with the enlarged nipple that I mentioned here a few days ago. In the meantime, here is a drawing by Dan Gillotte.
