two things from the harpers index

The good folks at Harpers magazine send out a weekly newsletter. Its one of the few things in life that I look forward to. If you dont already, you should subscribe to it. Here are two items from todays letter that I thought were worth mentioning.

“I expected a lot more people to surrender,” one soldier told a reporter. “From all the reports we got, I thought they would all capitulate.” Another soldier was unimpressed with the ruins of the ancient city of Ur, the birthplace of Abraham. “I’ve been all the way through this desert from Basra to here and I ain’t seen one shopping mall or fast food restaurant,” he told a British reporter. “These people got nothing. Even in a little town like ours of 2,500 people you got a McDonald’s at one end and a Hardee’s at the other.”

Workers at a Russian marriage agency said interest in finding American bridegrooms was declining because American men are “boring cold Martians with dead eyes.”

sad and alone
The numbers keep going up. More and more people read MM.com every day. Its close to two hundred people a day now. In spite of that, it seems like I get fewer and fewer emails from people. Its like Im putting on a play at a school for mute kids. Its weird. Im sweating my balls off up here on stage and I look out into the audience and theres just this sea of motionless, bulging eyeballs. I dont know what Im trying to say. Its just a weird dynamic. I need to do something to change it. I need to add a comments section of some kind. Either that, or I stop worrying so much what people think It would be nice to be less insecure, I think. I should make a note of that on one of the tear-stained sheets of paper that I keep here by the computer.

Speaking of visitors coming to this site, according to the webstats program, visitors are coming in droves (admittedly small droves) from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Can someone help explain why this is? I dont see a link on their site, but thats what the webstats say. Is this something that I should be concerned about?

As for my complaining about not enough people writing, please dont feel as though you have to write now. Believe me, I would complain twice as much if I were to get two hundred emails a day from folks. Just maybe check in once a year to let me know what you like and what you dont like about the site, and to let me know of interesting stuff that you think I, and the other readers of the site, might like to know about (i.e. Biblical prophecy influencing administration strategy, OCD, self-taught art and music, Columbo, etc.). Oh, you should also write to me if you have access to famous people that I could interview here. Id like to do more celebrity interviews, or, better yet, interviews with people who know celebrities.

OK, Im going to get back to work now.
